Athens, July 1, 2021
Hellenic Cables, a subsidiary of Cenergy Holdings, received the award for the project of the year 2020 for the “Electrical Interconnection of Crete-Peloponnese”, in the framework of the 4th Infrastructure-Transport Conference, held on Thursday, July 1st.
The award was presented by the General Secretary of Energy, Mrs. Alexandra Sdoukou in a ceremony held at the MEGARO International Conference Center, in Athens, in the framework of ITC 2021 – 4th Infrastructure-Transport Conference. The award was given jointly to IPTO, Hellenic Cables and the other contractors of the project.
The electrical interconnection of Crete-Peloponnese is a “milestone” project for Greece as it marks the first step for the transition of Crete to clean energy. It is one of the most difficult and demanding projects and it is correctly referred to as the “record project”, as this first underwater connection of Crete with the mainland is the longest AC (alternating current) cable connection in the world (approximately 178 km) and the greatest in depth, as it reaches 1,000 meters.
The project which was successfully implemented by Hellenic Cables, aims to replace the diesel-powered, generating stations of Crete, with their environmental polluting footprint, with a complex 150kV submarine and underground cable including its design, supply and installation, connecting Crete with the supply network of the mainland.
Mr. Alexis Alexiou, CEO of Hellenic Cables and Cenergy Holdings, upon receiving the award for the Company stated:
“In Hellenic Cables we are very proud that we contributed to a project so iconic for our country, the electrical interconnection of Crete with the Peloponnese. We are also deeply pleased that we have proved once again that we actively support IPTO’s vision for the country’s energy transition. Our participation in this project with the supply of a 150 kV submarine cable of 135 km length and 150 kV underground cables of 290 km total length, confirms the world class level of our production units in both Corinth and Thiva, but also the know-how and the focus on the perfect result that distinguishes our people. After all, behind each of our projects there is our talented and highly specialized people. “
